What AKC registration is
The American Kennel Club keeps the official record of purebred dogs in the US. An AKC-registered Labrador has a documented pedigree tracing back through registered parents, grandparents and beyond.
Every Archer Lodge puppy comes with AKC registration, and all of our breeding dogs are AKC registered.
Limited registration
With limited registration, your dog is fully registered with the AKC as a purebred Labrador. The one difference: any puppies your dog produces can't be registered with the AKC.
Limited registration still lets your dog:
- Be recognized as a purebred, registered Labrador
- Compete in many AKC events, like obedience, rally, agility and field work
- Earn AKC titles in those events
What limited registration doesn't allow is registering offspring or competing in conformation (breed) shows.
Full registration
With full registration, your dog can:
- Produce puppies that can be AKC registered
- Compete in conformation shows
Full registration is for families who plan to breed responsibly or show.
Can limited be changed to full?
Yes, but only by the breeder. The breeder can lift the limitation later if both sides agree, often once the dog has completed health testing. That flexibility lets breeders protect their lines while still supporting future breeding programs.
Why breeders use limited registration
Most puppies are going to family homes as companions. Limited registration protects the breed by making sure dogs are only bred when it's done thoughtfully, with health testing and the right pairing. It also protects bloodlines a breeder has spent years developing.
At Archer Lodge, we offer full registration only on a limited basis. We protect our bloodlines and the breed, following the guidance of our mentors in this.
Which litters offer full registration?
Full AKC registration is available on some of our litters, including Mila's, Aśka Willow's and Karmen's, at the higher end of our $3,500 to $5,500 price range. Current details are on our pricing and transport page.
Which do you need?
Ask yourself one question: do you plan to breed or show in conformation?
- No: Limited registration is all you need. Your dog is just as registered, just as purebred and just as loved.
- Yes: Let's talk. We'll discuss your goals, experience and plans for health testing before offering full registration.
Does registration affect health or temperament?
No. A puppy with limited registration comes from the same parents, the same testing and the same upbringing as one with full rights. The only difference is breeding and show eligibility.
Registering your puppy
When you bring your puppy home, you'll receive the paperwork to complete their AKC registration in your name. Register promptly, and consider adding the microchip number to the record as well.
Pedigrees
A pedigree is the family tree of your puppy. It shows their registered ancestors, sometimes including titles earned. Pedigrees are available on request for every pairing we breed. Just ask when you call or text.
A note on "papers" and scams
Be cautious of sellers who charge extra for "papers" or who can't tell you which registry a puppy is with. AKC registration should be part of the package from a reputable breeder, not an upsell. Our guide to choosing a Labrador breeder has more tips.
Showing and sports
If you're interested in showing, tell us early. Show prospects are possible from the right litter, usually with full registration, and we'll help you evaluate structure as the puppies grow. If you're more interested in obedience, field or agility, limited registration usually works just fine.
Responsibilities that come with full registration
Full registration is a responsibility as much as a right. If you plan to breed, expect to health test your dog before breeding, choose a partner who complements their results, register the litter, and screen every family who takes a puppy home. You'll also want to stay available for those families for years. It's rewarding work, and it's how the breed stays healthy. If that sounds like more than you want to take on, limited registration is the right choice, and there's no shame in it. Most of our families choose it, and their dogs live full, happy lives as treasured companions.
If you're unsure, we're happy to talk it through before you reserve.
